Storm Door Repair Latch Tips

Storm door repair on your latch is something you need to do as fast as possible. As one that is broken will mean the door will continuously slam in the wind or won’t open at all. Once you figure out the problem, repairing it is easy. Read the post of Christensen Door and Services for more helpful tips on how to do this.

Identifying the Problem

A quick glance will often tell you what exactly the problem is. When your door refuses to stay closed, check to see if the latch catches the bar. And, check to see if the latch bar is still intact. When your latch is sticking or your door refuses to open, check for any signs of rust and corrosion.

Moving the Bar

When your latch is failing to catch properly, you may need to move the bar which holds it in place. Open and close the door a few times to see exactly where the latch sits when compared to the bar. Use a screwdriver to remove the bar and reattach it in a position where your storm door will latch.

Broken Bar

A broken or missing bar is another quick fix. All you have to do is cut a piece of a clothes hanger to fit in the mountings, insert the wire by bending it slightly; then with some pliers straighten it back out.

Rust Cleaning

Your storm door latch may be sticking due to rust and corrosion. Steel wool should help you remove this, if necessary, use a metal nail file to clean areas which are hard to each.

Lubricate

A little silicone lubricant does go a long way to making sure that your latch works smoothly. Use a straw to get the lubricant deep inside the latch’s mechanism. Then use a paper towel to clean up any excess lubricant before it has a chance to stain your storm door.
